Bridging for Math Strength
This exciting project partnership with George Mason University and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is to offer strength-based formative assessment and bridging activities to support instruction for K-8 students.
Standards are considered a bridge when they: function as a bridge to which other content within the grade level/course is connected; serve as prerequisite knowledge for content to be addressed in future grade levels/courses; or possess endurance beyond a single unit of instruction within a grade level/course.

Formative Assessment is an invaluable tool for supporting ongoing learning! Formative assessment (FA) is focused on identifying and understanding what and how students are thinking to provide feedback and/or adjust instruction to better meet students’ learning needs (Black & Wiliam, 2009). The use of research based big ideas aligned to the learning trajectories research allows teachers to use frequent interactive assessments of students’ learning to “make decisions about the next steps in instruction that are likely to be better, or better founded, than the decisions they would have taken in the absence of the evidence that was elicited” (Black & Wiliam, 2009, p. 6)
